The British oil company BP has halted oil production from a platform at a significant oil field in Azerbaijan, shortly after commencing production at a new offshore rig. The suspension is part of a scheduled maintenance plan, with operations expected to resume on May 10, 2024.
The maintenance work includes valve replacements and regular repairs, outlined in the company's annual budget and performance report for 2024. The platform, located in the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli field in the Caspian Sea, has been in operation since 2008, exporting oil and gas to the Sangashal onshore terminal.
BP has confirmed that other operations in the Azerbaijani Caspian Sea, including those at the Shah Deniz field and the Sangashal terminal, will continue as normal. BP's partnership agreements in Azerbaijan since 2020 total $35 billion, highlighting the significance of the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli field.
