A Chinese company, Windey Energy, has announced plans to develop the world’s most powerful onshore wind turbine, marking a significant milestone in the global energy transition. This ambitious project aims to foster innovation in the renewable energy sector, which is becoming increasingly critical for the future of sustainable energy.
Windey Energy’s new turbine will have a capacity of 16 MW, making it the first turbine of its kind globally.
The development is part of a key demonstration project focused on scientific and technological innovation in China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. This initiative aims to strengthen research and development (R&D) capabilities for large-scale wind turbines, advance technological innovation in onshore wind energy, and improve grid integration.
The project specifically targets progress in wind turbine design, blade technology, and stability control, and the ultimate goal is to create the most powerful onshore wind turbine in the world.
Windey Energy has a long track record of expertise in the wind energy sector, having been involved in pioneering projects for over five decades. The company is also deeply committed to shaping the future of the industry, actively participating in more than 200 international and national standards committees.
With a workforce of 4,000 employees, including a dedicated team of 700 engineers focused on R&D, Windey is leveraging its extensive experience to lead innovations in both wind energy and cutting-edge electricity storage solutions.
In addition to its work on ultra-large wind turbines, Windey is developing next-generation wind turbine generators designed for desert and arid environments, such as the Gobi Desert. These generators feature advanced materials, including compressed carbon and glass hybrid blades, which reduce weight, enhance performance, and increase electricity generation.
Windey’s turbines are built to withstand extreme conditions, including harsh temperatures and dust storms, and use modular designs to optimize transportation and reduce construction costs. This cutting-edge technology highlights Windey's broader commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions worldwide.
