China's National Oil and Gas Pipeline Network Group announced on Monday that the China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline has completed construction and entered its final commissioning phase, according to CCTV. This milestone marks a significant development in China’s energy infrastructure, particularly for the eastern regions of the country. The pipeline is poised to become a key corridor for natural gas, facilitating increased supply to some of China’s most economically critical areas.
Once fully operational, the pipeline is expected to deliver 38 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually to major regions including Northeast China, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area, and the Yangtze River Delta. This amount of gas is sufficient to meet the needs of 130 million urban households, alleviating pressure on natural gas supplies in these high-demand regions. The increased supply will help ease constraints, improving energy security and ensuring reliable access to natural gas for millions of residents and industries.
Spanning an impressive 5,111 kilometers, the pipeline includes 3,371 kilometers of newly constructed sections. It begins in Heihe, located in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, and stretches all the way to Shanghai, China’s largest industrial hub. The extensive reach of the pipeline ensures that energy can be distributed efficiently across key industrial and urban centers on China’s eastern seaboard, supporting both the population and industries that rely on consistent and affordable energy sources.
As an essential energy route, the east-route pipeline is set to play a pivotal role in securing the region’s natural gas supply. In addition to bolstering energy security, it will also contribute to the ongoing transition towards a cleaner, low-carbon energy system. The project supports China’s broader efforts to develop a more efficient and sustainable energy infrastructure, while simultaneously promoting high-quality economic and social development in the eastern provinces.
