Egyptian Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat recently revealed the timeline for the long-anticipated electrical interconnection project with Saudi Arabia, a key initiative aimed at supporting Egypt's efforts to meet its growing domestic energy demands.
During a visit to Riyadh, Esmat discussed the progress of the Egyptian-Saudi electrical link, which is expected to enhance energy cooperation and stability between the two nations. The project’s completion is set for next summer, marking a significant milestone in Egypt's energy strategy.
In his meetings with Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Esmat emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation in the energy sector. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, including electricity storage solutions, renewable energy advancements, and the integration of smart grid technologies.
Esmat and bin Salman also explored how to enhance the electrical interconnection project, which is poised to benefit both countries by optimizing energy usage, stabilizing their electrical networks, and facilitating energy exchange.
Esmat highlighted that a dedicated working group has been formed to address any obstacles and ensure that the interconnection project adheres to its established timeline. The Egyptian Minister noted that the successful operation of this interconnection will pave the way for further energy initiatives, particularly those focused on clean energy. These projects align with both Egypt's and Saudi Arabia's goals of reducing carbon emissions and decreasing reliance on fossil fuels.
The $1.8 billion Egypt-Saudi electrical interconnection project is set to unfold in two phases. The first phase, expected to begin in June 2025, will connect the countries with a capacity of 1,500 megawatts, with the second phase to follow in November 2025, adding an additional 1,500 megawatts.
This ambitious project will not only strengthen the electrical grid stability in both nations but also open up new opportunities for investments in solar and wind energy projects. Both Egypt and Saudi Arabia are committed to fostering sustainable development, and this partnership is central to achieving their shared energy goals.
