The Ministry of Energy has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all Tanzanians transition to clean cooking energy, eliminating the use of firewood and charcoal that pose serious health and environmental risks. Speaking in Dar es Salaam during the launch of Oryx Gas’s Gesi Yente campaign, the Ministry’s Director for Clean Cooking Energy, Nolasco Mlay, praised stakeholders for supporting the government’s clean energy agenda, which targets 84% household adoption by 2034.
Mr. Mlay stressed that unsustainable energy sources like charcoal and firewood have caused massive environmental degradation due to deforestation. He said the government, together with partners like Oryx Gas, is working on subsidies and tax reductions for clean energy products to make liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) more affordable and accessible nationwide.
Oryx Gas Tanzania Managing Director, Araman Benoit, noted that many households still depend on charcoal, firewood, and kerosene, which contribute to respiratory illnesses, environmental damage, and economic strain. Through the Gesi Yente campaign, Oryx plans to recover, refurbish, and reintroduce unused gas cylinders into the market, helping families cook more safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively.
The campaign will also feature incentives, including motorcycles, bicycles, cooking sets, and school bags for participants who return unused cylinders. Mr. Benoit urged Tanzanians to embrace LPG, supporting President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision for a clean energy future. “Together, we can build a safer, healthier, and environmentally friendly Tanzania,” he emphasised.
