The government has fulfilled its promise to connect Kagera Region to the national electricity grid, marking a major milestone for reliable power access in the region. This follows the signing of contracts on August 25, 2025, for the construction of a 220kV transmission line from Benako in Ngara to Kyaka in Misenyi, alongside the Benako 220/33kV substation.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Dodoma, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, said the project is in line with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s directive to ensure Kagera residents enjoy stable and sufficient electricity for their economic and social activities. He assured residents that the project will be completed within 24 months.

Dr. Biteko noted that Kagera’s electricity demand is currently below 47 megawatts, but the new infrastructure will secure long-term supply and improve reliability. He highlighted multiple routes for delivering power to the region, including Benako–Karagwe–Kyaka and Nyakanazi–Biharamulo–Muleba. In addition, the 87MW Kakono Hydropower Project is progressing toward contractor selection, further strengthening the region’s energy outlook.

Beyond Kagera, President Samia’s government is rolling out major power transmission projects nationwide, such as the 400kV Tanzania–Zambia line, the Chalinze–Dodoma line, and the Mkuranga–Pwani line to serve southern Tanzania. These initiatives aim to expand grid coverage, enhance regional integration, and provide reliable electricity to millions of Tanzanians, reducing dependence on external sources and supporting economic growth.
