The Mozambican government has announced that the French energy giant, Total Energy , has won a project to build a solar power plant in the Dondu district of Sofala province, in the east of the country.

Mozambique aims to produce 200 gigawatts of renewable energy sources by 2024, in order to provide electricity to about 10 million citizens, and plans to deliver electricity to all its population of more than 30 million people by 2030.

The French company is developing a liquefied natural gas project in the Rovuma Basin off the coast of the northern province of Cabo Delgado in Mozambique.

And last February, Total Energy announced the resumption of work on the liquefied natural gas project in Mozambique, after a nearly year-long hiatus due to violence.

The project's investments amount to about $20 billion, and the first shipment of the project is expected in 2026, two years later than previously announced in 2024.

Dondo solar power plant

The solar power plant is located in Dondo, 30 kilometers from the port of the city of Beira, and has a production capacity of 40 megawatts.

The Mozambican Energy Regulatory Authority said that the final finalists for the selection of the winning company for the project to construct the solar power plant in Dando witnessed the competition of 5 companies, of which one company later withdrew, leaving only four companies that submitted viable technical proposals.

Total Energy plans to invest $60 billion in renewable energy projects until 2030, and aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Mozambique inaugurated on April 1, the largest solar power plant in the country, with a production capacity of 41 megawatt-hours.

The Mozambican government aims to expand renewable energy projects to reduce carbon emissions, especially solar energy projects and wind farms.

The construction of 3 solar power plants in Mozambique will reduce carbon emissions by about 25 thousand tons / year, and meet the electricity needs of 300,000 families.

According to the US Agency for International Development, Mozambique has an installed electricity generation capacity of 2,827 MW, 2,184 MW of which is generated from hydroelectric power stations , and part of this electricity is exported to neighboring countries, especially the Kingdom of Eswatini.
