Namibia is making steady progress toward Mission 300 a global initiative led by the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank following the official launch of its National Energy Compact. The announcement signals the country’s growing commitment to expanding energy access and strengthening its role in continental electrification efforts.

Designed as a strategic framework, the National Energy Compact reinforces Namibia’s participation in Mission 300, which seeks to provide electricity to 300 million people across sub-Saharan Africa by 2030. The compact is expected to play a critical role in accelerating power sector development while aligning national priorities with broader regional and global energy goals.

Introduced by Namibia’s Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, Modestus Amutse, the compact aims to reduce the country’s dependence on imported electricity. It also supports Namibia’s Sixth National Development Plan, targeting electricity access for 200,000 households, while advancing the National Integrated Resource Plan to achieve 80% electricity self-sufficiency and 70% renewable energy penetration. Currently, Namibia generates about 40% of its electricity locally, with the remaining 60% imported from neighboring countries.

Meanwhile, developments in exploration and production an important pillar of Namibia’s energy landscape continue to show promise. Reconnaissance Energy Africa recently reported strong operational performance in 2025, highlighting progress across multiple strategic fronts, including the drilling of its second well in the Damara Fold Belt and the discovery of significant hydrocarbons.

According to President and CEO Brian Reinsborough, engagement with national leadership has underscored the importance of these hydrocarbon discoveries in supporting onshore development and strengthening Namibia’s long-term energy supply.
