Construction of oil and gas wells in California has been linked to an increased risk of valley fever, a fungal infection caused by inhaling spores released from disturbed soil. The disease can cause symptoms similar to the flu or COVID-19.

A study found that people living within 3 miles of newly constructed wells had a 12.5% higher risk of infection during the 90 days after construction began. Researchers believe dust generated by drilling, land clearing, and heavy machinery may contribute to the increased risk.

The findings emphasize the importance of controlling construction dust and maintaining safe distances between industrial sites and residential areas. Researchers recommend protective measures, including N95 masks and home air filters, to help reduce exposure and protect public health.
