Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions rose by about one per cent in 2025, reaching 691 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, according to the Canadian Climate Institute. The increase was mainly linked to greater use of natural gas for home heating.
Despite increased production, the oil and gas sector recorded lower emissions. However, Canada is falling further behind its climate targets, with experts warning that the country could be significantly delayed in meeting its 2030 goals.
Canada aims to reduce emissions by 40–45 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The report highlights the need for stronger action to meet these commitments.
