From a business perspective, the discovery was made at the Malampaya East One (MAE-1) well, located about 5 km east of the Malampaya gas-to-power project. The well is estimated to contain around 98 billion cubic feet of gas in place, with initial tests showing production of 60 million cubic feet per day, signaling strong commercial potential. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr highlighted that the well’s productivity is comparable to the original Malampaya wells, reinforcing confidence in further development. The project is operated by the Service Contract 38 consortium led by Prime Energy, alongside UC38, PNOC Exploration Corporation, and Prime Oil and Gas Inc., with additional exploration ongoing in nearby prospects.

From an economic perspective, the discovery comes at a critical time for the Philippines, which has one of Southeast Asia’s most coal-dependent power grids. The newly discovered gas is equivalent to nearly 14 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, enough to meaningfully support domestic power generation. The presence of condensate described as a high-value liquid fuel adds further economic upside by providing an additional revenue stream and helping stabilize electricity supply. This development aligns with the country’s broader energy transition, as data shows the Philippines was on track in 2025 to record its first decline in coal-fired power generation in 17 years, driven by increased use of gas and LNG.

From a geopolitical perspective, the discovery strengthens the Philippines’ position in managing energy security amid volatile global fuel markets. By extending the Malampaya production contract by 15 years in 2023, the government signaled strong policy support for domestic gas development, even as it opened the door to LNG imports to cover future supply gaps. Prior to this find, experts warned Malampaya could run dry by 2027, increasing dependence on imported energy. This new discovery helps ease those concerns, giving the country greater leverage and flexibility as it balances domestic production, LNG imports, and its long-term shift toward cleaner energy sources.
