President Samia Suluhu Hassan has placed oil and gas firmly on the 2025 campaign agenda, framing it as a cornerstone of Tanzania’s next economic chapter. Speaking in Lindi, she stressed the significance of the long-awaited LNG project: “Negotiations are in the final stages, and once completed, the project will provide jobs, revenues and opportunities that our people, especially in the South, have waited for too long.” The $40 billion investment with Shell and Equinor is expected to transform the southern regions into engines of growth.

At a campaign stop in Tabora, Samia highlighted her commitment to advancing the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). “This is a strategic project, not just for Tanzania but for the region. It will bring in investment, create employment, and open doors for small businesses along the corridor.” Her words reflect a deliberate strategy to link mega-projects with everyday benefits, countering perceptions that oil and gas only serve multinationals.

In Zanzibar, the President tied energy development to her wider blue economy agenda. “Our blue economy is not just fishing and ports — it includes oil and gas as well, which will create jobs, bring in revenue, and strengthen our economy.” By situating oil and gas within a broader economic vision, she underscored that Tanzania’s growth must come from multiple sectors working in synergy.

She also pledged to restore Tanga as an industrial hub, connecting port expansion with energy development. “Tanga will not be left behind. With oil, gas, and trade opportunities, we will make it an engine of industry once again.” The consistent theme in her speeches is that energy projects are not isolated ventures but drivers of regional equity, national transformation, and Tanzania’s ambition of becoming a trillion-dollar economy by 2050.
