As part of its strategy to boost domestic oil and gas production, Saudi Aramco has contracted 10 drilling rigs from the Egyptian Drilling Company (EDC), reinforcing the energy cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The Petroleum Drilling and Services Company (EDPSC), a subsidiary of EDC operating within the Kingdom, continues to deliver outstanding performance, with its rigs both onshore and offshore actively operating across various Saudi regions.
Notably, EDC Rig 45 received a prestigious Award of Excellence from Saudi Aramco in 2024, underlining the high performance and reliability of Egyptian-operated rigs.
EDC has signaled its ambition to expand internationally, especially in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, in line with its strategic objective to broaden its overseas footprint. The company currently operates a fleet of 69 drilling and well maintenance rigs and employs around 6,000 skilled personnel, including technicians and engineers.
In 2024 alone, EDC drilled approximately 200 new wells and carried out maintenance and repairs on over 600 existing wells, while adding two land rigs equipped with the latest drilling technologies achieving a remarkable safety record with zero lost-time injuries reported during operations.
During a recent General Assembly meeting, Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Eng. Karim Badawi, highlighted EDC’s regional success and reaffirmed government support for its expansion. He praised the company’s technical capabilities, skilled workforce, and advanced fleet, emphasizing EDC’s ability to collaborate with international oil giants such as Saudi Aramco and Kuwait Oil Company.
Minister Badawi underscored the importance of tapping into new markets and enhancing foreign partnerships as part of Egypt’s broader strategy to boost both domestic energy output and external market presence.
Looking ahead, EDC aims to further expand into regions including India, the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Turkey, Algeria, West Africa, Brazil, and Thailand. According to company president Eng. Osama Kamel, EDC achieved $406 million in revenue during the past year and continues to invest heavily in talent development.
The company’s internationally accredited training center has played a key role in upgrading the skills of its workforce, especially through specialized programs for newly graduated engineers, ensuring the sustained availability of qualified professionals and maintaining the company's competitive edge in global drilling operations.
