The Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA) of Tanzania and Algeria’s Hydrocarbon Regulatory Authority (ARH) have opened discussions aimed at boosting cooperation in the oil and gas sector. The meeting, held on September 9, 2025, at ARH headquarters in Algiers, focused on exchanging technical expertise to strengthen regulation of petroleum exploration and production activities.
PURA, represented by Mr. Shigela Malosha on behalf of Director General Engineer Charles Sangweni, emphasized the importance of sharing experiences to improve operational efficiency. Malosha noted that both PURA and ARH oversee technical aspects of oil and gas projects, and collaboration would enable regulators to adopt best practices for managing facilities, equipment, and compliance standards.
ARH Acting President, Mr. Samir Houghlaouene, echoed the sentiment, stressing that cooperation between the two regulators is critical to ensuring sustainable oil and gas operations in both nations. He highlighted that sound oversight of technical activities forms the backbone of successful petroleum projects.
Established under the Petroleum Act of 2015, PURA is mandated to regulate and monitor upstream petroleum operations in Tanzania, while ensuring transparency and accountability. Its talks with ARH mark another step toward strengthening international collaboration, aligning regulations, and building institutional capacity to support energy development.
