Six memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were signed during the Tanzania–Japan Business, Investment and Tourism Forum held yesterday in Osaka, marking a major step in strengthening economic ties between the two countries. The signing ceremony, presided over by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, included a significant oil and gas sector agreement between the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and Japan’s JGC Corporation.
Other key MoUs included partnerships between the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) and Axcel Africa, as well as between Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (ZIPA) and the same Japanese firm. Energy and health also featured strongly, with the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC) signing an agreement with Toshiba Energy Systems, while Tokushukai Medical Corporation entered into cooperation with the University of Dodoma and Benjamin Mkapa Hospital. A tripartite agreement involving AFRECO, the university, and the hospital was also concluded.
Industry and Trade Minister Dr. Selemani Jafo said the agreements reflect President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision of making Tanzania a premier investment destination. He emphasized sectors such as infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, and strategic investments, where Japan’s experience can help accelerate Tanzania’s economic growth. Prime Minister Majaliwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting international partnerships that connect local producers to global markets.
Zanzibar’s Trade and Industrial Development Minister Omar Said Shaaban highlighted the isles’ readiness to welcome investors, pointing to ongoing development of industrial zones in Pemba. Meanwhile, Latifa Khamis, TanTrade Director General and Tanzania’s lead at Expo Osaka 2025, said the forum was designed to build long-term business synergies, especially in energy, mining, health, and agriculture, with mutual growth potential.
