Tanzania is charting a bold path to unlock its vast petroleum potential through modern technology, strategic investments, and international collaboration. Speaking at the Africa Technology Conference in Dar es Salaam, the Director General of the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA), Eng. Charles Sangweni, emphasized the nation’s commitment to innovation as a key driver in boosting exploration and increasing returns. “Harnessing innovation is essential to enhancing exploration, improving efficiency, and maximising returns from the country’s natural resources,” he stated. With 23 exploration blocks currently open for investment, Tanzania is actively engaging global stakeholders to unlock its energy wealth.
The country has already discovered approximately 57.54 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, with production from Mnazi Bay and Songosongo being used for power generation, industrial use, and transportation. Eng. Sangweni reaffirmed that this shift is aimed at reducing reliance on fuel imports and conserving foreign currency. He also stressed the importance of preparing local professionals to match the pace of global technological change. “We must therefore ensure that Tanzanians and local companies participate fully and meet the required standards,” he urged, underlining the need for inclusive growth.
The three-day Africa Technology Conference, co-organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), served as a platform for Tanzania to share its vision and attract investment. Themed “Navigating the Future: Building Technological Excellence for Sustainable Energy in Africa,” the event brought together stakeholders and institutions from across the continent. “Tanzania has the opportunity to learn from technologically advanced countries and exchange experiences regarding the direction of the energy sector,” said Eng. Sangweni, adding that students would also benefit by seeing real examples of success in the industry.
SPE officials echoed Tanzania’s vision, pledging support for the marketing of exploration blocks and the development of local talent. Dr. Riverson Oppong, SPE Africa Regional Director, highlighted the need to place youth at the forefront of the energy transition, while SPE Tanzania Chairman Eng. Alex Stephano praised the government for facilitating the exchange of knowledge and opportunities. “We are making progress in the oil and gas sector. There are already production areas, and research activities are ongoing, which is attracting more investors,” Stephano noted.
