The Ministry of Energy, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has organized a workshop aimed at equipping experts from various government institutions with the necessary documentation to develop technical criteria for effective energy management and auditing in the country. This initiative seeks to improve energy efficiency and sustainability across Tanzania.
The workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS), the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), the Tanzania Industrial Research and Development Organization (TIRDO), the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT), and the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). Other participants included the Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA), the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU), and the National Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (NACTVET).
Speaking at the workshop in Morogoro on October 2, 2024, Acting Assistant Commissioner for Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Imani Mruma, emphasized that the workshop primarily targets institutions responsible for promoting effective and accurate energy use in the country. He noted that, following the workshop, participants would collectively produce a document outlining best practices for monitoring energy product quality and conducting audits.
Mr. Mruma further stated, "The government’s aim is to ensure that every Tanzanian has access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy. Thus, training various stakeholders is crucial for accelerating the implementation of the energy efficiency agenda." Aaron Cunningham, Energy Efficiency Implementation Manager from UNDP, added that the preparation of technical criteria and skills for managing and auditing energy use is essential for training experts who will help the country monitor and manage energy efficiency effectively. He highlighted that the workshop would provide guidelines that would be implemented nationwide by various energy and education stakeholders, reinforcing UNDP's commitment to supporting Tanzania in creating a conducive environment for energy efficiency and accessibility.
