The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals has urged the Ministry of Energy to continue closely supervising the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) to ensure its timely completion.
This was stated by the Vice-Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Kirumbe Ng'enda, on September 7, 2024, during a visit to inspect the progress of the project, which is expected to generate 2,115 megawatts once completed.
"The Ministry should continue to carefully oversee this project to ensure that all nine machines are completed as planned," said Hon. Ng'enda.
The committee also commended the government for ensuring that the remaining machines continue to be completed and operational, noting that three machines have already been completed and are producing 705 megawatts, with machine number six in its final stages of completion.
For her part, Deputy Minister of Energy, Hon. Judith Kapinga, said that the Ministry of Energy has been working closely with the Parliamentary Committee, receiving its guidance, advice, and recommendations.
"The primary role of the Committee is to supervise us, the Government, and we ensure that all your directives are implemented, with their success visible in various projects like the JNHPP, which has now reached 98% completion," said Kapinga.
She added that under the leadership of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Hon. Dr. Doto Biteko, the Ministry will continue to supervise the project to ensure its timely completion.
Kapinga further stated that the project contractor has already been paid approximately TZS 6.3 trillion out of the TZS 6.5 trillion required for payment.
