Tanzania is poised to play a pivotal role in Africa’s energy transformation, with President Samia Suluhu Hassan reaffirming the nation’s commitment to energy security and sustainability. Addressing diplomats and representatives of international organizations at the State House in Dar es Salaam during the New Year Diplomatic Sherry Party, President Samia outlined transformative initiatives shaping Tanzania’s energy sector for the future.

One of the highlights of Tanzania’s energy agenda is hosting the African Heads of State Energy Summit, focusing on the Mission 300 initiative, which seeks to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030. The summit, organized in partnership with the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and the African Union, will bring together policymakers, experts, and leaders to develop collaborative solutions for Africa’s energy challenges.

President Samia emphasized the near-completion of the 2,115-megawatt Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP), a cornerstone of Tanzania’s enhanced energy generation. She also highlighted ongoing efforts to integrate Tanzania’s energy grid with neighboring regions through the East African Power Pool (EAPP) with Kenya and the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) via Zambia. Additionally, bilateral projects like the Kikagati-Morongo hydropower project with Uganda and the Rusumo hydropower project with Burundi and Rwanda underscore Tanzania’s commitment to cross-border energy collaboration.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo lauded the diplomatic community’s support in strengthening Tanzania’s international partnerships. He commended President Samia’s leadership in advancing regional integration, international cooperation, and sustainable development, emphasizing Tanzania’s openness to addressing shared challenges and exploring opportunities for collaboration. The Dean of Diplomatic Corps, Dr. Ahamada El Badaoui Mohamed, further highlighted Tanzania’s achievements in infrastructure, economic resilience, and sectoral growth, underscoring the nation’s leadership role in driving Africa’s progress.
