The Minister of Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, has announced that after achieving 100 percent completion of the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP), the Government has now shifted major efforts toward constructing electricity transmission lines. This shift aims to connect various regions across the country as well as neighboring nations. He shared this during his visit to Rufiji District in the Coast Region, where he inspected power generation progress at the dam.

During the tour, Minister Ndejembi emphasized that the next crucial step is ensuring that the energy produced at the facility efficiently reaches citizens. He stressed that distribution is now the Government’s top focus to make sure the electricity serves the public effectively. The inspection highlighted the importance of transitioning from generation to reliable delivery.

The Minister further noted that the construction of transmission lines remains a national priority, as it will increase access to stable electricity and stimulate economic development in both urban and rural areas. He highlighted the role of this infrastructure in bridging the power gap between regions and supporting nationwide growth. The Government believes the improved network will boost productivity and social welfare.

Minister Ndejembi added that completion of the transmission infrastructure will enable Tanzania to export electricity to neighboring countries, increasing national revenue and positioning Tanzania as an energy distribution hub in East Africa. This move is expected to strengthen the country’s leadership in regional power supply. Meanwhile, TANESCO Director General Lazaro Twange stated that the country no longer faces major power challenges, although minor adjustments are still needed to accommodate new customers and projects that require electricity.
