Experts from Tanzania’s Ministry of Energy and affiliated institutions are actively participating in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Meeting of Permanent Secretaries and Technical Experts on Energy and Water, currently underway in Harare, Zimbabwe. This crucial gathering is a preparatory platform for the upcoming Joint Meeting of SADC Ministers Responsible for Energy and Water, aimed at strengthening regional cooperation in essential service sectors.

During the meeting, Tanzania used the platform to advance economic diplomacy by presenting its strides in rural electrification, led by the Rural Energy Agency (REA). The country’s achievements in expanding electricity access to underserved areas were well-received and viewed as a possible model for replication across other SADC member states. This effort not only highlighted technical progress but also strengthened Tanzania’s position as a leader in sustainable energy solutions within the region.

Key topics discussed also included the development of the oil and gas sub-sector and the potential for shared infrastructure projects among member states. These conversations form part of broader efforts to boost energy security and regional integration, addressing the long-term energy and water needs of Southern Africa. The focus remains on delivering better services to citizens across SADC countries, while building collective resilience.

Tanzania’s delegation features senior technical leaders, including Eng. Styden Rwebangila (Ministry of Energy), Eng. Hassan Saidy (REA), Derick Moshi (TPDC), Eng. Deogratius Mariwa (TANESCO), and Msafiri Mtepa (EWURA), among others. Their participation underscores the strategic importance Tanzania places on regional collaboration and policy influence. The outcomes of this technical meeting will soon be submitted to the upcoming Joint Meeting of SADC Ministers of Energy and Water for final decision-making.
