Tanzania is set to announce the quantity of newly discovered natural gas in the Mnazi Bay block in Mtwara Region next week, following the successful completion of drilling three wells by the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and its partner, M&P. The announcement is expected to highlight the potential of the discovery to strengthen the country’s energy resources and create new investment opportunities.

Energy Minister Juma Homera said on Sunday, October 18, 2026, that the government would reveal the volume of gas discovered during an event scheduled for October 26 and 27 in Msimbati, Mtwara Region. He said the event would also mark the launch of the newly drilled wells and provide details of the drilling results.

According to Dr Homera, the drilling programme involved two development wells and one exploration well, all of which have been completed successfully. The new discovery could add to Tanzania’s estimated 57.54 trillion cubic feet of natural gas resources, although the exact quantity identified through the latest drilling activities will be announced at the event.

The minister said expanding the country’s natural gas resources was part of the government’s strategy to enhance energy security, attract investment and promote the wider use of gas across key economic sectors. These include electricity generation, industrial production and the manufacturing of gas-derived products, which are expected to support economic growth and strengthen Tanzania’s energy sector.
