The Parliamentary Energy Committee has commended the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) for its efforts in improving electricity infrastructure across the country. The government, through TANESCO, announced that the total capacity of power generation systems connected to the National Grid reached 3,091.71 megawatts by December 2024, an increase of 248.75 megawatts (8.75%) from 2,842.96 megawatts in September 2024.

Deputy Minister of Energy, Hon. Judith Kapinga, shared this update on January 16, 2024, in Dodoma while presenting the Ministry of Energy's report on electricity production and distribution from September to December 2024. She attributed the capacity increase to the integration of 235 megawatts from the JNHPP project and the Kigoma power plant into the National Grid.

Minister Kapinga further explained that TANESCO has been upgrading various power generation facilities, including those at Kihansi, Kidatu, and Ubungo, to ensure reliable electricity supply nationwide. She also noted that the state of power transmission and distribution infrastructure continues to improve, with transmission lines totaling 8,025.38 kilometers and distribution lines extending 197,597.34 kilometers.

As a result of this enhanced infrastructure, TANESCO connected 109,918 new customers between September and December 2024, bringing the total number of connected customers to 5,225,193. Chairman of the Parliamentary Energy and Minerals Committee, Hon. David Mathayo David, lauded TANESCO and the Ministry of Energy for their ongoing efforts to strengthen electricity generation, transmission, and distribution systems throughout the country.
