Tanzania is gearing up to host a significant African energy conference aimed at mobilizing $190 billion to provide electricity to 300 million people across the continent by 2030. This initiative highlights the country's commitment to enhancing energy access, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas, aligning with the government’s strategic efforts to transform its energy landscape.
Scheduled for January 2025, the conference has attracted attention from major financial institutions like the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB). Their involvement reflects a growing recognition of Tanzania’s proactive approach to energy development and its success in implementing projects that extend electricity access to underserved communities.
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa announced this initiative during a recent gathering in New York City, hosted by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). He emphasized that President Samia Suluhu Hassan has given her full support for Tanzania to serve as the host, showcasing strong governmental backing for the conference.
This event aims not only to address the pressing issue of energy access in Africa but also to foster innovative solutions and partnerships. By uniting various stakeholders, including international organizations and investors, Tanzania hopes to create a collaborative roadmap for sustainable energy development, marking a crucial step towards achieving universal electricity coverage by 2030.
