The Director General of the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA), Engineer Charles Sangweni, emphasized that technological growth is a key driver for the progress and efficiency of Tanzania’s petroleum sector. He made these remarks while opening the Africa Technology Conference in Dar es Salaam on May 27, 2025. Technological advancement plays a major role in the success of the petroleum industry.

The conference, organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers Tanzania with support from the Africa Regional Society of Petroleum Engineers, gathered over 150 experts from both Tanzania and abroad. They discussed recent developments and exchanged experiences focused on modern technologies in production, processing, and transportation within the petroleum value chain. The event highlighted the critical role of modern technology across all aspects of petroleum operations.

Engineer Sangweni stressed the urgent need to prepare a skilled workforce capable of using these advanced technologies. He highlighted the importance of equipping young professionals and industry experts with the knowledge and experience necessary to keep pace with global technological changes. Preparing youth and professionals to adapt to evolving technology is essential for the industry’s future.

Furthermore, Sangweni spoke about the growing role of artificial intelligence in petroleum engineering and urged industry members to continuously upgrade their expertise in this area. He encouraged ongoing learning and innovation to maintain competitive advantages in the sector. Embracing artificial intelligence and continuous knowledge enhancement will drive future success.
