TotalEnergies, in partnership with Basra Oil Company and QatarEnergy, has officially launched the construction of ArtawiGas25, the first gas processing facility designed to process associated gas from the Ratawi field in Iraq's Basra region. This facility, which forms part of the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), represents a $250 million investment and will process 50 million cubic feet per day of gas that was previously being flared. The processed gas will be directed to local power plants, providing energy to approximately 200,000 households in the Basra area.
The GGIP, which was signed in September 2021, is a significant $10 billion multi-energy initiative aimed at enhancing Iraq's energy infrastructure. The project includes a large-scale gas processing plant with a capacity to process 300 million cubic feet per day in its first phase. The recovered gas will contribute to power generation capacity, helping to fuel 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of electricity for Iraq. This development is part of a broader effort to reduce gas flaring, which has long been a challenge in the region.
One of the primary goals of the ArtawiGas25 facility is to reduce gas flaring at the Ratawi field by the end of 2025, contributing to a more sustainable energy production process. The facility's innovative modular design is not only expected to address the immediate needs of the Ratawi field but also serves as a model that could potentially be replicated across other oil fields in Iraq. This could significantly increase Iraq's ability to harness its natural gas resources and contribute to the country’s long-term energy security.
The ArtawiGas25 project will also provide significant economic benefits, creating up to 160 direct and indirect jobs during its construction phase, and 30 permanent jobs once operational. Julien Pouget, Senior Vice President of Middle East & North Africa at TotalEnergies, emphasized the importance of the project in demonstrating the company's commitment to delivering valuable solutions that align with the Iraqi government's expectations. Pouget also highlighted the upcoming milestones of the GGIP, including the construction of a 1 GW solar energy project, which will further support the country’s electricity needs while reducing emissions.
