TotalEnergies and Oil India Limited (OIL) have signed a Cooperation Agreement to conduct methane emissions detection and measurement campaigns at OIL’s facilities in India. This collaboration will utilize TotalEnergies’ innovative AUSEA technology, a pioneering solution for detecting and measuring methane and carbon dioxide emissions. The AUSEA system, mounted on a drone, uses a dual-sensor setup that can identify methane leaks and pinpoint their sources, making it one of the most accurate technologies available for emissions monitoring. This agreement aligns with the global industry's increasing focus on reducing methane emissions and enhancing sustainability.
The partnership comes as OIL, a state-owned enterprise, joins the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), a global initiative aimed at achieving net-zero operations by 2050. Launched at COP28 and co-chaired by TotalEnergies' CEO, the OGDC sets ambitious targets for near-zero upstream methane emissions and the elimination of routine flaring by 2030. Members of the Charter, including OIL, are committed to measuring their emissions, reporting their progress, and sharing best practices to advance decarbonization in the oil and gas sector.
A key feature of the AUSEA technology is its ability to reach hard-to-access emission points, both onshore and offshore, providing unprecedented accuracy compared to traditional detection methods. This capability makes it an essential tool for operators looking to identify and mitigate methane emissions across various types of industrial facilities. By deploying AUSEA in different regions around the world, TotalEnergies aims to support OGDC signatories in their mission to achieve near-zero methane emissions by 2030, contributing to the global effort to combat climate change.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, expressed his satisfaction with the partnership, noting that OIL’s adoption of the AUSEA technology is a significant step in advancing the goals of the OGDC. Dr. Ranjit Rath, Chairman and Managing Director of OIL, also highlighted the importance of the collaboration, stating that joining the OGDC underscores India's commitment to global environmental goals and reflects OIL's determination to reduce emissions. The cooperation between TotalEnergies and OIL signals a growing momentum in the energy sector toward sustainable practices and emission reductions.
