The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Energetech-Tantel Holdings to distribute natural gas across the country via road and rail over the next 12 months. The project, valued between $80 million and $200 million, will begin in Dodoma, Geita, Mwanza, and Kigoma, expanding clean energy access to regions currently underserved.

“The project will help supply gas to the country’s capital Dodoma, as well as key production areas in the central regions which have shown high gas demand,” said Goodluck Shirima, Petroleum and Gas Commissioner at the Ministry of Energy. He noted that first gas deliveries are expected around 12 months from the MoU signing. Currently, only Lindi, Mtwara, Coast, and Dar es Salaam benefit from access to natural gas.

The project will involve the construction of gas receiving centers and distribution infrastructure for households, industries, and vehicles, with a strong focus on sustainability and efficiency. Energetech CEO Daniel Gabai said the investment aligns with Tanzania’s long-term vision. “This will be the most efficient clean energy project on the continent, serving both local and regional markets,” he remarked.

TPDC Managing Director Mussa Makame emphasized the importance of private sector involvement in expanding energy access. “Accelerating gas production with a commercial focus and involving the private sector is key to our strategy,” he said. Once complete, the project will eventually cover the entire country, with implementation planned in phases and initial operations beginning within a year.
