The UAE is advancing its green energy initiatives to reduce emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. As part of this effort, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Siemens Energy signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on September 17, 2024. This agreement focuses on joint efforts to enhance the green and clean energy sector in the UAE by addressing grid infrastructure challenges, promoting sustainable development, and exploring technological opportunities for a reliable and sustainable energy transition.

The MoU, signed during the World Utilities Congress in Abu Dhabi, aims to foster innovation, share knowledge, and develop research. It emphasizes collaboration in technical workshops and brainstorming sessions to tackle challenges related to network expansion, industrial development, and future energy strategies. The agreement also includes cooperation with local universities and research institutes to support the energy transition and develop youth expertise in the field.

Additionally, the MoU outlines plans to assess the UAE's existing grid infrastructure and integrate renewable energy solutions, including hydrogen production and storage. This assessment will help align the grid expansion and sustainable energy strategies with the UAE's energy landscape and industrial economy.

Sherif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum, highlighted that such partnerships are crucial for achieving the UAE's clean energy goals and supporting sustainable development. The UAE has increased its clean energy contribution to 27.83% of its electricity mix in 2023, aiming for 32% by 2030. The collaboration with Siemens Energy is seen as a significant step towards enhancing the UAE's position as a global leader in clean and sustainable energy.
