The UAE's Hatta Hydropower Plant, poised to be the first of its kind in the Arabian Gulf region, is nearing completion and set to play a pivotal role in the country's clean energy ambitions. Announced by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) on November 12, 2024, the plant's progress stands at 94.15%, with installation of the facility's generators underway in preparation for trial operations slated for early 2025. This milestone highlights the plant’s key role in expanding the UAE’s renewable energy capacity, supporting the global push to reduce emissions and combat climate change.
The Hatta Hydropower Plant relies on a sophisticated water storage and energy generation system, integrating hydropower with renewable solar energy. Water is stored in the Hatta Dam and a newly constructed overhead dam, and advanced turbines, powered by clean energy from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, are used to pump the water to the upper reservoir. The energy is then released through a 1.2-kilometer underground tunnel to generate electricity, offering a sustainable, efficient model for energy production. The plant will have an impressive 78.9% efficiency rate, providing rapid response to demand within just 90 seconds.
Once completed, the Hatta Hydropower Plant will have a production capacity of 250 MW and a storage capacity of 1.5 GWh. The project is expected to have a lifespan of 80 years, ensuring long-term energy stability for the region. With an investment of AED 1.421 billion (approximately $390 million), this groundbreaking facility is part of a broader vision to develop the Hatta region, providing sustainable infrastructure, innovative job opportunities, and contributing to the UAE’s goal of becoming a global leader in clean energy.
The Hatta Hydropower Plant is a crucial element of Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and its Carbon Neutrality Strategy, which aim to have 100% of the emirate's energy production come from clean sources by 2050. This aligns with DEWA's efforts to diversify the energy mix, incorporating solar power, green hydrogen production, and other renewable technologies. As the UAE continues to invest in cutting-edge infrastructure, the Hatta Hydropower Plant stands as a symbol of the nation’s commitment to sustainable development, climate action, and energy innovation.
