Uganda has expressed strong interest in expanding cooperation with Russia in the oil and gas sector, signaling a potential deepening of bilateral ties between the two countries. The announcement was made by John Leonard Mugerwa, Head of the International Legal and Social Affairs Department at Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in remarks to Russian news agency TASS. He emphasized that Uganda sees Russia as a valuable partner due to its long-standing experience in the energy industry.
According to Mugerwa, Russia’s technical expertise and operational capacity make it an attractive collaborator for Uganda’s energy ambitions. “Russia has extensive experience and expertise in the energy sector, and we are exploring various options for cooperation in this area,” he said. Uganda is currently assessing different frameworks through which Russian companies and institutions could support the development of its oil and gas sector.
Beyond oil and gas, Uganda is also interested in broadening cooperation with Russia across other strategic industries. Mugerwa highlighted construction and information and communications technology (ICT) as additional sectors where Russia has significant capabilities. He noted that Uganda is keen to diversify its partnerships to support national development goals and infrastructure expansion.
In addition to sector-specific cooperation, Uganda aims to strengthen overall trade relations with Russia. The Ugandan government is seeking to expand trade across multiple areas, reflecting a broader push to enhance economic engagement between the two countries. Mugerwa said Uganda remains open to new opportunities that would promote mutual growth and long-term collaboration.
