Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan held a key bilateral meeting on Sunday, November 17, discussing enhanced cooperation in strategic sectors such as energy, oil, and gas. The meeting took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, ahead of the G20 Summit activities, as shared by the Indonesian president's office through an Instagram post. This high-level dialogue reflects both nations' commitment to strengthening ties and fostering mutual growth across various fields.
One of the main outcomes of the meeting was an agreement to focus on human resource development, particularly through education and training programs, to improve capacity in both countries. Both leaders also emphasized the importance of accelerating digitalization efforts as a means to drive progress, ensuring that both Indonesia and Tanzania can leverage technology for future economic growth. This mutual commitment sets the foundation for deeper collaboration in the coming years, particularly in areas critical for national development.
A significant milestone from the discussions was the planned visit of President Hassan to Indonesia in January 2024. During her visit, both nations are expected to explore further cooperation in key areas such as trade, investment, health, infrastructure, and human resource development. One of the concrete steps outlined was the initiation of negotiations for a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) in 2024, designed to boost bilateral trade and enhance economic ties between the two nations.
Both Indonesia and Tanzania also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the energy sector, especially in oil and gas, with involvement from prominent Indonesian state-owned companies such as PT Pertamina and Medco Energi. In the health sector, the two leaders agreed to collaborate on pharmaceutical development, expediting drug product registrations. Additionally, they highlighted Tanzania’s participation in the Indonesia-Africa Forum, reinforcing their shared commitment to promoting South-South cooperation and supporting the Palestinian cause.
