SHINYANGA: Tanesco to Construct Largest Solar Power Plant in Kishapu, Shinyanga Region

TANESCO, the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited, is set to embark on a significant renewable energy project with Total Energies. The company is poised to sign an agreement for the construction of a state-of-the-art solar power plant in Kishapu, Shinyanga Region. This venture will mark a milestone for the country, as the completed plant is anticipated to become one of the largest solar power facilities in East Africa.

During a live broadcast on a local television station, TANESCO's Managing Director, Maharage Chande, announced the project's details. The solar power plant is estimated to cost 43.2 million Euros, and preparations are already underway to secure a reputable contractor for the job.

The initiative aligns with Tanzania's National Five Year Development Plan (FYDP III) (2021-2026), which prioritizes strengthening the energy sector and enhancing the availability and reliability of electrical power. By increasing the generation capacity, transmission, and distribution networks, the plan aims to optimize the energy landscape.

Furthermore, FYDP III emphasizes the promotion and development of renewable energy technologies. It encompasses projects involving biogas, geothermal, LPG, solar, and wind energy to harness sustainable power sources for the nation's progress.

Maharage Chande highlighted the five power generation centers in the country based on geographical zones. Center A encompasses the North East Generation Network, which includes various power sources such as Malagarasi Hydro (49.5MW), Kakono Hydro (87MW), Rusumo Hydro (26.67MW), Kigoma Diesel (12MW), Solarwazi Solar (5MW), Nsongezi Hydro (35MW), and Kikagati Murongo Hydro (7MW).

Similarly, center B covers the generation network in a specific area, contributing 877MW to the overall power capacity. Center C corresponds to the North West Generation Network, encompassing Nyumba ya Mungu Hydro, Same Solar, Hale Hydro, and New Pangani Hydro, with a combined output of 147MW.

Center D focuses on the South East Generation Network, primarily driven by the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Power Project (JNHPP) with a capacity of 2,115MW, along with additional projects totaling 3,417.5MW. Center E centers around the South West Generation Network, producing 1,286MW.

In a separate endeavor, TANESCO has invested 4 billion Tanzanian Shillings this year to combat the effects of climate change on rivers. This allocation is part of the company's commitment to community social responsibility, addressing biodiversity loss and mitigating the impact of climate change in various river basins across the country.

Managing Director Maharage Chande emphasized TANESCO's dedication to environmental protection, emphasizing collaborations with the Rufiji River Basin and Pangani River Basin. These partnerships involve fees for water usage and additional funds to clear blockages in water diversions.

Mr. Chande also provided an update on the Kihansi spray toads, a species that faced extinction. Around 500 toads are expected to return to Tanzania in June this year after being temporarily relocated to the US in 2020 due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. This effort highlights TANESCO's commitment to preserving biodiversity and safeguarding endangered species.

With these initiatives, Tanzania aims to enhance its energy infrastructure, promote sustainable practices, and contribute to global efforts in combating climate change.
