The 16th meeting of the East African Community (EAC) Energy Sectoral Council of Ministers, which started on February 12, 2024 at the Community's Headquarters in Arusha, has been concluded on February 14 2024. In the meeting led by its Chairman, Hon. Shaibu Hassan Kaduara who is the Minister of Water, Energy and Minerals, Zanzibar suggested the existence of a joint strategy of the Community to deal with and prevent the damage of various energy infrastructure including distribution and transportation.
In addition, the Conference gave recommendations to the Member States of the East African Community to increase the speed and budget of the implementation of various energy projects at the National and Community level that will strengthen the availability of sufficient, affordable, sustainable and safe energy for the development of the Community and people. His Opening the meeting, Minister Kaduara explained that the Community will be able to stimulate investment, employment and double the growth of the economy and business if, along with other issues, there is access to reliable and safe energy.
"The Energy Sector has a unique importance in achieving economic and social development in the Community, so the importance of access to reliable, safe and affordable energy is a necessity and not optional as it is a stimulus to attract investment and make products and services produced to be competitive in the local and international market”. Minister Kaduara also explained.
As well, Hon.Kaduara used the opportunity of the meeting to issue an invitation to the Member States of the East African Community to participate in the inauguration ceremony of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) which will be held on February 25, 2024.
The Ministerial meeting was preceded by a Secretaries level meeting Chiefs who reviewed and discussed the implementation of the decisions and instructions of the Council of Ministers of the Community. also received and discussed information on the development of the energy sector in the areas of electricity, oil, gas and renewable energy.
Kenya's KenGen signed a KSh 250 million deal with Eswatini to assess geothermal potential, reinforcing its role as Africa’s geothermal leader. The project supports Eswatini’s renewable energy goals while diversifying KenGen’s revenue and advancing clean energy solutions.
