Ethiopia is set to begin electricity exports to Tanzania via Kenya, marking a major milestone in East Africa’s energy trade. The agreement, once finalized, will see Ethiopia supply 100 megawatts of electricity to Tanzania, bolstering regional energy cooperation. According to Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) Corporate Communications Director, Moges Mekonen, the initial electricity export amount could be adjusted through further discussions between Ethiopia and Tanzania. Currently, Kenya and Tanzania have agreed to use high-voltage transmission lines for this power exchange, though the deal is still pending approval from Kenya’s regulatory authority.
The power will be transmitted through a high-voltage line from Ethiopia's Wolaita Sodo region, passing through Kenya's Suswa substation before reaching northern Tanzania. This strategic infrastructure will enable a direct electricity trade route between the two countries, with significant implications for regional energy cooperation. Once the regulatory hurdles in Kenya are cleared, the project is expected to strengthen East Africa's energy grid and improve power access across the region. Ethiopia’s involvement in this cross-border trade highlights its growing role as a regional energy hub, capitalizing on its vast renewable energy potential, especially from hydropower.
The deal also highlights the increasing regional collaboration between East African nations, with energy infrastructure serving as a critical tool for improving access to reliable electricity. By sharing resources and infrastructure, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania aim to enhance energy security and economic growth within the region. This agreement also positions Ethiopia as a key player in the East African power pool, a network that could potentially expand to include other neighboring countries in the future.
Finalizing agreements and ensuring the necessary infrastructure is ready are the key steps before the trade can officially begin. Once operational, this electricity export initiative is expected to not only address power shortages in Tanzania but also promote sustainable energy solutions across the region. By fostering stronger partnerships and energy integration, this deal could pave the way for additional energy trade agreements and further economic development in East Africa.
Tanzania is upgrading the Kinyerezi One power station with new transformers to meet rising electricity demand. This is part of a broader effort to improve the national power infrastructure and support economic growth.
