Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Hon. Dkt. Doto Biteko has said that the work of drilling thermal wells in Tanzania will start in April this year so that we can verify the existing thermal resources before starting the activities of generating electricity from that energy.
Dr. Biteko has said after visiting the sources and plants of Ground Temperature electricity in Naivasha town, Nakuru county in Kenya.
“We have come to the geothermal power generating facilities owned by the KenGen Electricity Generating Company and we have seen how they have taken steps towards the continuation of this resource as they are already producing geothermal power of over 799 megawatt. ” says Dr. Biteko.
He has said Tanzania on his part, has already allocated funds for the development of thermal sources and that KenGen company in April this year will be in Mbeya province to start excavating thermal sources in Ngozi and Kiejo-Mbaka area in collaboration with Thermal Development Company Tanzania (TGDC).
Dr. Biteko has congratulated KenGen company of Kenya for the big step they have made in the development of Ground temperature where more than 60% of the electricity in the country comes from that energy.
He has said that Tanzania has decided to increase the sources of electricity production and now a lot of energy is being put into developing such projects of Ground temperature to get enough electricity for the citizens.
On his part, the General Manager of Soil Development at KenGen, Peketsa Mangi has said that the country has had good cooperation with Tanzania in ensuring those countries succeed in developing Soil.
He has thanked the Government of Tanzania for giving KenGen a chance to work together with experts from TGDC to dig wells for verification of the resources in the country and explained that the company is ready to do the work involved successfully.
